Yusei Abe is an illustrator, fine art printmaker, and graphic designer born in Kagawa, Japan. He moved to California at eighteen and earned a Bachelor of Fine Art from California State University, Long Beach, specializing in illustration. Following graduation, he built his early career as a Los Angeles–based artist, holding his first solo exhibition, Monochromanic, at Giant Robot 2 Gallery in 2018. He returned to Japan in April 2021 and now lives and works in Kagawa, though he continues to exhibit internationally.
Abe's intricate, black-and-white artwork draws heavily on Japanese and European mythology and the fairy tales he read in childhood, rendered primarily in fine pen and ink. His detailed, dreamlike imagery has been shown extensively at Giant Robot 2 (Los Angeles), Nucleus Portland, Haven Gallery (Northport, NY), Outré Gallery (Melbourne), and KochxBos Gallery (Amsterdam), among others, as well as in curated group shows with Thinkspace Gallery and WOW x WOW. Notable exhibitions include his solo shows Monochromanic (2018), Midnight (2020), Desert Dreaming (2021), and A Dream Within a Stone (GR2 Gallery, 2023).
